Canada and Alberta Advance West Coast Oil Pipeline Project

Canada and Alberta governments signed agreements to advance a major oil pipeline to the West Coast, targeting construction approval as early as 2027.

According to OilPrice, the Canadian and Alberta governments have taken significant steps toward developing a major West Coast oil pipeline corridor. Following a Memorandum of Understanding signed in November 2025, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith executed an Implementation Agreement in May 2026 that establishes concrete timelines for advancing the project toward regulatory approval.

The infrastructure initiative aims to facilitate crude oil exports from Alberta to Asian markets through a new pipeline connecting the province to British Columbia. The implementation agreement sets an ambitious target for construction approval as early as September 2027, signaling the governments' commitment to accelerating the permitting process for the project.

The designation of the pipeline as a project of national interest underscores its strategic importance to Canada's energy sector and economic objectives. Both provincial and federal authorities have aligned on a coordinated approach to overcome regulatory hurdles and move the venture toward development, though final approvals and market conditions will ultimately determine the project's realization.
