CATL Invests in Wood-Based Graphite Producer to Support Battery Supply

China's battery maker CATL is backing a New Zealand firm developing graphite from forestry waste for lithium-ion batteries.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., one of the world's leading battery manufacturers, has announced an investment in a New Zealand-based company focused on converting forestry byproducts into graphite suitable for use in lithium-ion batteries. The move signals growing interest from major battery producers in securing alternative sources for critical battery materials.

The investment reflects CATL's strategy to diversify its supply chain for graphite, a key component in battery production. By backing wood-derived graphite technology, the Chinese firm is positioning itself to potentially reduce dependence on traditional graphite mining while leveraging sustainable forestry waste streams.

The partnership underscores the battery industry's broader push toward developing more sustainable sourcing practices as electrification accelerates globally. As demand for lithium batteries continues to surge, battery makers are exploring innovative pathways to secure critical materials while addressing environmental concerns tied to conventional extraction methods.
