Fed Must Communicate Clearly on Inflation Targets, Clarida Warns

Former Fed Vice Chairman Richard Clarida cautions that changing the central bank's preferred inflation measure risks creating market uncertainty without clear communication.

Any significant shift in the Federal Reserve's approach to measuring inflation must be accompanied by transparent communication to avoid roiling financial markets, according to Richard Clarida, the former Federal Reserve Vice Chairman now serving as a global economic adviser for Pimco. Clarida's warning comes as incoming Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh has signaled interest in reviewing alternatives to the personal consumption expenditure core index, the Fed's current preferred inflation gauge.

The concern centers on how markets might interpret a change in the inflation measure that policymakers use to guide monetary policy decisions. Without clear explanation of what the Fed is targeting and why it is considering alternatives, shifting benchmarks could introduce confusion about the central bank's policy intentions and undermine confidence in its decision-making framework.

Clarida emphasized that while reviewing inflation metrics may be part of a broader policy reassessment, the Fed must prioritize clarity above all else. Markets and the public need to understand not only what measures the Fed is considering but also the rationale behind any potential changes to ensure continuity in policy expectations.
