FERC Takes Action on Data Centers, Grid Reliability

Federal regulators address growing reliability concerns following PJM capacity auction results at monthly FERC meeting.

According to Utility Dive, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission held its monthly meeting where officials signaled mounting concerns over grid stability issues following recent PJM capacity auction outcomes. FERC Chairman highlighted the compounding nature of recent developments, suggesting that the latest market results add to existing reliability challenges facing the nation's power grid.

During the meeting, the Commission established new deadlines for data center reliability standards and directed both the California Independent System Operator and Southwest Power Pool to submit comprehensive reports on grid "seams" issues—the operational and jurisdictional gaps between regional transmission organizations. These directives underscore growing regulatory focus on ensuring adequate coordination among interconnected grid operators.

FERC also advanced a separate complaint involving cost recovery mechanisms for a New Jersey transmission project, reflecting the Commission's ongoing effort to balance infrastructure investment, consumer costs, and market efficiency. The regulatory actions collectively signal heightened scrutiny of grid resilience as demand pressures intensify across the U.S. energy system.
