The sustainable aviation fuel market faces significant headwinds as the global aviation sector works toward ambitious decarbonization targets. According to the International Air Transport Association, sustainable aviation fuels currently represent just 0.6% of total jet fuel consumption, falling far short of the 65% target needed by 2050 to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. The production lag reflects a combination of economic and logistical challenges facing the nascent industry.
One of the most pressing barriers to SAF adoption is cost. Sustainable aviation fuels command a price premium of two to five times that of conventional jet fuels, creating a substantial economic burden for airlines already operating with notoriously tight profit margins. Beyond pricing, the global aviation industry faces constraints in refining capacity and access to adequate feedstock supplies, limiting the ability to scale production to meet future demand.
India's geographic location, agricultural output, and emerging renewable energy infrastructure position the nation as a potential leader in sustainable aviation fuel production. As international carriers and governments intensify efforts to meet climate commitments, India's ability to leverage local resources and develop SAF production capacity could reshape the sector's supply chain and accelerate the transition toward sustainable aviation globally.
