According to Construction Dive, a joint venture led by Kiewit and including Stacey Witbeck and Herzog has been selected to construct a critical 119-mile segment of California's high-speed rail corridor. The $3.5 billion contract represents a significant commitment to the state's long-delayed transportation infrastructure initiative.
The project scope covers track construction running partway between Bakersfield and Merced, two Central Valley cities roughly 100 miles apart. This segment is part of a scaled-back vision for the overall rail system, which has faced years of budget overruns and timeline delays since its original conception.
The revised plan aims to have trains operational by 2033, a considerably later target than initial projections. This extended timeline reflects the complex engineering and funding challenges that have plagued the project, though state officials view the latest progress as a meaningful step toward completion.
For North Carolina contractors and construction firms, such major infrastructure awards highlight the competitive landscape for large-scale public works projects nationwide. The success of established players like Kiewit demonstrates continued demand for experienced teams capable of executing complex, long-term transportation initiatives.
