Oil Surges Past $100 as Global Supply Disruptions Escalate

Crude prices rally above $100 on Middle East tensions and pipeline disruptions affecting major shipping routes.

Crude oil prices posted substantial weekly gains as multiple geopolitical flashpoints disrupted critical shipping and pipeline infrastructure. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global energy transport, remains severely constrained, while attacks on tankers in the Red Sea by Yemeni Houthis have added further pressure to supply chains. According to OilPrice, Brent crude was trading at $100.30 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate at $91.70 per barrel, each gaining more than $10 since the start of the week.

Supply concerns intensified following Kazakhstan's suspension of oil flows through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium system, prompted by Ukrainian drone strikes on the infrastructure. The cascading disruptions across multiple regions underscore the fragility of global energy networks and their vulnerability to geopolitical escalation, with analysts warning that further escalation in the Persian Gulf could push prices even higher.

The price surge reflects broader market anxiety about near-term availability as traditional producers face operational constraints and traders reassess risk premiums. Energy markets remain sensitive to any additional supply shocks as inventories tighten and shipping delays compound the tightening balance.
