Pennsylvania Tightens Data Center Energy Oversight

Pennsylvania has enacted legislation requiring data centers to file annual energy reports and PJM to expand regulatory transparency on demand forecasts.

According to Utility Dive, Pennsylvania has implemented new regulatory measures to gain greater visibility into the energy consumption patterns of data centers operating within the state. Under the updated framework, data center operators are now required to submit annual energy usage reports to state authorities, establishing a formal mechanism for tracking power demand across the sector.

The legislation also mandates that PJM Interconnection, the regional transmission organization serving much of the state, provide state regulators with enhanced transparency into its demand forecasting methodologies and projections. This expanded reporting requirement aims to give policymakers better insight into how grid operators anticipate and plan for the growing power needs driven by data center expansion.

The move reflects broader state-level concerns about how rapidly expanding data center deployments affect electricity infrastructure and long-term energy planning. By collecting comprehensive usage data and improving visibility into forecasting processes, Pennsylvania's regulators can better assess the strain on grid resources and coordinate infrastructure investments accordingly.
