Pentagon Backs $400M Scandium Expansion Bid to Reduce China Reliance

Australian rare earth miner Sunrise Energy Metals secures $400M Pentagon financing to boost scandium production for defense and aerospace sectors.

Sunrise Energy Metals has secured $400 million in long-term debt financing from the Pentagon to fund expansion of scandium production capacity. Scandium, a rare earth element critical to aerospace and defense applications, has become a strategic priority as the U.S. government moves to establish alternative supply sources outside of China.

The financing arrangement reflects a broader Washington initiative to strengthen domestic supply chains for materials deemed essential to national security. By backing the Australian miner's expansion plans, the Pentagon is investing in diversified global sourcing that reduces dependence on Chinese rare earth production, which has historically dominated the market.

According to Bloomberg, the deal signals growing U.S. commitment to developing allied suppliers for specialized materials used in advanced manufacturing and military systems. Sunrise Energy Metals CEO Sam Riggall indicated the capital infusion will accelerate the company's ability to scale production and meet anticipated demand from defense contractors and aerospace manufacturers.
