US Crude Inventories Rise Amid Geopolitical Shipping Pressures

US crude oil stockpiles increased by 2.6 million barrels last week despite recent monthly drawdowns, according to API data.

The American Petroleum Institute reported that crude oil inventories in the United States expanded by 2.603 million barrels during the week ending July 17, reversing the prior week's decline of 564,000 barrels. While this uptick marks a temporary pause in inventory management, the longer-term trend reveals more dynamic shifts in supply positioning across the domestic market.

Over the past three months, commercial crude stockpiles excluding the Strategic Petroleum Reserve have contracted sharply, declining by just over 57 million barrels across the thirteen-week period. However, year-to-date figures tell a more modest story: total US crude inventories are down only 7 million barrels in 2024, a discrepancy largely attributable to ongoing releases from the SPR that have effectively offset broader inventory declines elsewhere in the system.

The weekly build comes as geopolitical tensions around shipping routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, continue to create logistical challenges for global oil trade. These shipping headwinds are expected to remain a key factor influencing inventory levels and crude price dynamics in the coming weeks as market participants assess supply resilience amid international complications.
