According to OilPrice analysis, the United States has averaged just 392 miles of high-voltage transmission line construction annually since 2010—a figure that falls substantially below the estimated 5,000 miles needed each year to support current and future energy demands. This chronic underinvestment threatens grid reliability and complicates the nation's energy transition efforts.

The disparity highlights ongoing structural challenges in grid modernization, including regulatory hurdles, lengthy permitting processes, and financing constraints that continue to slow transmission infrastructure deployment. High-voltage lines operating at 345 kilovolts and above serve as critical backbone systems for moving power across regions, whereas lower-voltage lines typically handle local distribution. The shortage of major transmission corridors increasingly constrains the ability to integrate renewable energy sources and balance supply across geographically diverse markets.

Policymakers have proposed various solutions to accelerate grid development, yet the pace of actual construction remains far below what energy experts and infrastructure analysts deem necessary. Without substantial improvements to permitting timelines and investment mechanisms, the transmission gap could become an increasingly significant bottleneck for both grid modernization and the clean energy transition.
